Tax-free spending for qualified education expenses

You can use your START savings however you’d like—but to keep your distributions tax-free, put the money towards qualified education expenses.

  • Graduates in caps and gowns.

    START College Saving

    For eligible colleges and universities, graduate programs, vocational and trade schools, or registered apprenticeships:

    • Room and board
    • Computers and laptops
    • Books and other tools, if required by the school
    • Recognized postsecondary credential programs

    Beneficiaries must be enrolled at least half-time at a postsecondary institution for room and board to be considered a qualified higher education expense.

    For education expenses related to a beneficiary’s enrollment in kindergarten through twelfth grade:

    • K-12 tuition
    • Curriculum materials
    • Books and institutional materials
    • Online educational materials
    • Tutoring
    • Testing fees
    • Dual enrollment tuition & fees for higher education
    • Education therapies for students with disabilities

Withdraw funds

When the time comes to pay for education, it’s easy to access your funds when and how you need them. Securely request withdrawals online or through the READYSAVE™ 529 mobile app.

  • Pay participating schools directly via ACH
  • Request an electronic transfer to the account owner or beneficiary’s bank account
  • Send a check
